“Vermont Perspectives: Sense of Place, State of Mind” brims with stories firmly rooted in the landscape of Vermont, but the book also reflects a state of mind that ponders the human experience. Here, Averyt invites her readers to listen the serenade of peepers in a roadside marsh, and the deep woods call of the native Hermit Thrush. She writes of wild apples, chicken pie suppers and an up-country fiddle hoedown. But she also plums the symbolism of walls, the complexity of “nothingness” and the power of a spoken word. She writes of poetry and baseball, imagination and amazement. She sits down to midnight tea with Emily Dickenson, stands at midnight in Red Square, flirts with a supernova and throws a birthday party for Albert Einstein.
