Less is More, a Masterclass in the craft of Micro Fiction with Jayne Martin

Limitations and boundaries force us to get creative. In this workshop, the maximum story word count will be 300. Firm. Title not included.

Hosted by Riki Moss and Margo Mertz

The world of miniatures holds a special fascination. Who hasn’t admired the meticulous art of Bonsai, peered into the interior world of a sugar Easter egg, or marveled at whole tiny ice cities in a snow globe? Limitations and boundaries force us to get creative. In this workshop, the maximum story word count will be 300. Firm. Title not included.

Two weeks prior to the workshop participants will receive reading materials on the craft of writing micro, along with several story prompts to get the juices pumping. You will be asked to write and submit your story to me no later than one week before the workshop.

At the workshop, you will be invited to read your story for group feedback if you choose. No pressure. I will give you my notes on your stories during that time.

In the week following, you may submit your revised piece to me for additional notes.

I’m sorry, but with only two hours allotted live workshop time, stories exceeding the 300-word limit will not be able to be shared or eligible for feedback. The goal of this workshop is for participants to come away with a story well on its way to completion.

Participants should have at least a basic understanding of the flash fiction genre.

Looking forward to playing in microfiction sandbox with you!

This event is part of the Master Class series funded by the Burlington City Arts Foundation, support for which we are extremely grateful.

THE FEE FOR THIS CLASS IS $10, payable through Eventbrite. Funds will be directed to future masterclasses.
