Moving a story forward

The April 20 workshop was all about voice, analyzing George Saunders‘ story “Mothers Day.” Reading aloud first paragraphs from authors that included: Elena Ferrante, Haruki Murakami, John Steinbeck, Jennifer Egan, and others, we pulled apart elements of voice, style, tone, perspective, and pacing.

The next Read Like a Writer | Write Like a Reader Workshop on Saturday, May 4 at 10:30 AM, will focus on moving a story forward via a journey, one that proceeds internally, emotionally or quite literally on a bus in Tony Earley‘s story “Backpack.” which we’ll read in advance of the workshop.

For some authors, the traveler walks through doors, or falls down wells, or takes an elevator and is deposited in an alternate reality. He may meet up with a strange annoying child while searching for his missing cat as in The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami, or follow a smuggler through a black door in a bombed out building as in Mohsin Hamid’s Exit West, or hitchhike through the galaxy in search of a good meal as in Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe. The timelines in these novels are straight or curiously crooked, and always, on every journey, something’s bound to happen.
